I have good friends who hunt, but they eat what they kill. Here's a question for you: can you be good friends with someone who won't obtain their own food? Meat eaters who don't hunt, vegetarians who don't grow food...either way, you wind up with someone who is only contributing to waste. Wasted meat, wasted skins, wasted compost, spent fuel...If you don't earn the food you eat, that's just as bad as not eating your kill.

Granted, modern society makes earning all your own food nearly impossible, or at least a very bad idea. But some? Why is some so hard?

I'm starting a balcony garden to deal with that, but it's freaking *ridiculous* what the homeowners association limits! You can't have anything hanging over the edge of your balcony wall, so I can't grow anything that needs full sun. I swear the HOA actively hates environmentalists, there's also a rule against sun-drying things.

I'm thinking about getting a couple small trees just to spite the fuckers. You have problems with my basil? Well, here's a fuckin' mango tree.

For the record, I'm a vegetarian because of the ecological footprint, I do not look down upon people for eating meat. Unless it's a KFC doubledown.

Got a container garden myself, and I fish(ed. Not with oil freaking everywhere, thanks).

I actually had really good results growing my basil indoors for two years while I waited for a balcony, and I'll be wintering it indoors. You can do a lot with a nice sunny window and some shelves.

I miss seafood like stupid. I'd go pescatarian if I could catch it myself --right out because I'm in central Florida, though hilariously sometimes you see people getting on the El in Philly with a cooler and fishing gear-- and be reasonably sure it was neither endangered or fed on toxic stuff.

I really want to try gator, but only if it tries to eat me first. I need a really strong taser.

Would you learn how to hunt with a gun? Deer are extremely overpopulated in a lot of places, what with their natural predators all being run off or killed. Venison might be a good compromise (although it's best to find a game butcher unless you're REALLY not fainthearted. Messy.)
