But saying that elevated social status removes "blackness" is saying that "blackness" is bad. I don't buy it. Why can't someone be educated, genteel, advantaged, and still be black? Why does gaining that advantage replace a part of a person's identity? This mindset negates the hard work and self-perception of millions of people.
I find it telling that the author's last name (of the book, not the article) is Painter.
