I think capital punishment is a misdirection issue used by politicians to take focus of weak plans in regard to current issues - budget, employment, international standing, healthcare, etc., that will actually impact the majority of people and are always going to come up.
As far as my personal feelings - I think there are some people that can't be rehabilitated, and I think that sometimes what someone has done is so awful that we shouldn't try. For the most heinous repeat offenders, like proven serial killers, I think it should be an option...but first the accuracy rates of all areas of the justice system need to be improved. No chain is stronger than its weakest link.
