This is actually a trend that started a few years ago.
In the documentary, "Lord, Save us From your followers" they set up a confessional at a pride day in San Francisco where the guys running the confessional would start by confessing and offering pennance on behalf of their church for the sins done against the homosexual community. It actually was a very touching part of the documentary, because after the confession by the people running the confessional, the attendees at pride day were so touched, that they began opening up and bonding with the film makers.
