Major gender role-reversal may be on the horizon

Interesting:

In the recent recession, 3/4 of the American jobs lost were lost by men. Currently, the U.S. workforce is more than fifty per cent women. And the boom is still swinging our way. For every two men who receive a bachelor's degree this year, three women will. Thirteen of fifteen job sectors expected to grow are dominated by women. And in fertility clinics that offer sex selection, more parents want daughters than sons; sometimes the preference is two to one. In other industrialized nations like South Korea, major shifts have also happened, and they are under way from India to Iceland to Rwanda.

It may not be a man's world much longer.

part of that came from the recent recession, where because women were earning 70 cents on the dollar compared to their male counterparts, when the companies needed to lay someone off, they would fire the higher paid male worker to save money.

Good so far, perhaps our politics will also improve with women in charge. I'm all for that.

I do find the idea of non-adaptive male backlash worrisome, though. You two, and most of the other men I'm friends with, would get through just fine. But I KNOW some guys who are going to go all Al Bundy if it reaches them, or worse.

I suspect the backlash will be white before it's male, and directed at immigrants before US-born women. It's not that bitterness is in such short supply that there's none to spare for women, Jews, American Indians, gays, or anyone else, but I think the traditional “outsiders” will feel it first.

I actually wonder if that backlash is already occurring? Look at the surge of misogyny in media, current sexual abuse rate, the hyper-masculine male portrayals in media etc.

what is going to need to happen, at some point soon, is a new conversation on gender identity, and how gender groups need to interact
