Lots of the books I love get turned into movies; I'm a nerd and we're a huge market share. The movie never holds up 100%, but usually they do OK. Then there are extremes:
Stardust: it would have been impossible to translate it directly to film. But what was made was as close as possible in most respects. The added scenes with the airship captain were wonderful, and added to the overall feel of the story. An excellent job.
On the other hand....
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: the two versions have some characters in common, and the same title, and maybe a thematic element or two. But the movie is nowhere close to the same story, and it is not good on top of that.
