Sounds like these kids ARE stupid. Even the crappiest, most over-crowded public school will teach you basic life lessons (such as tsps = teaspoon and the fact that there is a bag in a vacuum). I am flabbergasted and can't think of something clever to say. Way to go, modern parenting. Way. To. Go.
I think there are a fair number of intelligent people out there who lack certain basic skills. My roommate is a very smart man with a very good job, and he can do a lot of things with computers that I can't. I still had to teach him how to use a laundromat the other day, and he can't shop for groceries without me. He's still not going to get scurvy, though. He does eat fruit.
I had the laundromat in mind when I wrote that. I didn't learn how to do my own laundry until I moved into the dorms at college. They actually hosted a short class during welcome week to teach us. At least I wasn't the only one.
