I guess you have to either see them play live They are really an amazing live band...every show is full on intensisty...(I can tell the drummer puts his heart and soul into every single show. and the singer does too...or else she is one hell of an actor)
It might also help if you go to one of their shows with all of their friends up in boston. alot of my boston friends are quite close with them so perhaps its shifted my judgment based purely on the quality of the music.
I managed to listen to a whole minute and a half of Coin Operated Boy before I got sick of it.
And there is no way I'm going to see them live. If they're playing with a band I like, or at a Con I want to be at, that's one thing. But I won't drop any amount of money to see them.
They grow on some people. I absolutely hated/mocked the crap out of them the first time I saw them live (they opened for someone I paid to see... I think it might've been Nine Inch Nails), but they were handing out free 3-song CD promos and, after listening to it a couple times, I started to dig it.
Yes, Virginia is a decently put-together album. Backstabber is a catchy-as-hell song.
