I've been a very very good girl and sent out a ton of initial contacts for U.S. Box, so now it's time for a break.

Friday night: I went to karaoke. I know, I know, I swore I'd never go. But Craig was going to be there--and I wanted to be with him. Met a bunch of fun girls, saw Donny Rodgers (wow, it's been a while), actually got up and sang. Hey, the girls needed a third to be Columbia for the Time Warp. How could I say no?

Saturday: Joey and Kimmy got married!!! Seeing ex Rob Schmelter was weird, but got ok once he got drunk and quit moping. Danced for six hours. Craig is completely capable of having a great time in a room full of close-knit strangers, and he doesn't need me to babysit him. Whoo! My SISTER even thinks he's great.

Sunday: Napped. Then--get this--went to a country/western bar with Craig and Bree. Now I know I don't seem like the country type, but I was raised on Willie Nelson and Patsy Cline right alongside Iron Maiden and Metallica, so it wasn't that big a stretch. I only got to dance once though. Now I ask you, what's the point of going to a dance club if you're not going to dance? Yeah, I'll go back and learn more, and dance more. I'd still rather go freestyling at QXT. Still a fun time.

Off to set up a private site for my press clients! More later.

So Granny C. has got to be in her mid-80s. And she danced more than a lot of people half her age at the reception! Of course, there is a precedent for such coolness on her part: until she could no longer drive, she rode a Harley. And when she was too thin to wear them anymore, she gave me two pairs of knee-high Italian leather boots. Stupid me, when the soles got crappy I gave them away. But my stupidity in no way detracts from how damn cool she is. She took over as grandma pretty much as soon as she met my family (she's Joey's maternal grandmother). With Elaine's baby, she's actually a great-grandma now. And she passed on her coolness--her daughter Patty has got to be 5'10", and she stands perfectly straight. Now, a teenage girl in the 50s and 60s who is that tall and stands with such good posture is a special thing. Most girls were embarrassed to be tall...still are...and so had bad posture. It takes a certain level of strength and confidence to carry yourself when you stand out in any way. I have a lot of respect for Patty for doing it, and for Granny C. for teaching her to. You go, Granny!

A whole lot of people are talking about how they're ashamed to be American. They say we're a disgusting country. They hate their homeland.

Wake the fuck up! Torturers, murderers, censors, bigots--these are NOT Americans! They are people who call themselves American but do NOT uphold the ideals this country stands for. George W. Bush is a xenophobe who wants to censor free speech and reunite church and state. Therefore, he is NOT American. Those people who live on my country's soil, gain from my country's healthcare system (which is discriminatory and therefore also un-American), have their un-American speeches protected by the laws that should protect me, and make Americans look bad by representing every horrible stereotype the rest of the world holds of America as an overweight celebrity are NOT Americans.

No, this country is not perfect. Many of the people who live here are terrible. Many of the people in power are worse. They are also NOT American. The ideals are what makes America. The dream of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The idea that all men are created equal (and don't tell me that's anti-feminist; all men=mankind=the entire human race, so shut up you hyper-sensitive pseudo-hippie). The Bill of Rights. SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. These are America. The people who uphold them are the ONLY Americans. Everyone else is just wasting our airspace and I'm sick of hearing them called American. They make the real thing look bad. Yes, the people who dreamed it up are fuckups. All humans are fuckups. It's part of the species. The dream is what's important.

Love America. Hate the people who try to keep the dream for themselves. Jingoism is not patriotism. Learn the difference.
