For Margaret
Mar. 14th, 2013 04:06 pm"So," the deep voice rumbled from the tent flap, "this thing with the dragon-boy. What's going on there?"
Anduin jumped up in bed, surprised into wakefulness. He blushed at Carne's question and presence; not only did he not know how to answer, but in the heat of the jungle he was sleeping in just a clout.
Still, while they were in a neutral zone, Anduin didn't want to cause any trouble. He motioned Carne in and turned up a lantern while Carne closed the flap.
Carne lowered his considerable bulk to sit cross-legged on the floor beside Anduin's bed. The human prince was maturing quickly now as he neared 16 years of age. His blond hair had grown long and unruly on this mission, bleached in the sun as he tanned. A growth spurt had given him an easy five new inches in height; Carne mused that the boy might come up to his shoulder now. A pale hint of stubble shone nearly white in the lamplight. Carne mused that Anduin must look much like his mother, as he bore little resemblance to his hulking dark warrior father.
He saw Anduin blushing. The young Tauren Chief was not entirely familiar yet with the action; something that fur did not reveal in his people, though he'd felt himself do it, and he knew Anduin was feeling some kind of discomfort. Was he embarrassed? Ashamed? This was not Carne's purpose in coming here.
"Anduin, please don't worry yourself. What you and I have is different from anything else I've experienced, and I don't think it will be lessened if I share you with someone else. I only worry because the dragon is so young, and his lineage..."
"I know, Carne. His father was the Destroyer. He meant Wrathion to be a mindless beast, but he's not. And you'd be amazed at how wise he is, and how observant. Dragons don't age like us; he's nothing like a two-year-old human. He's nearly a man. He's closer to you than he is to me."
"I don't worry that he's too young in years, Andy. I know dragons mature quickly. But he's inexperienced, and now there's no one in his flight to teach him how to use his gifts. The others seem disinclined to help him, to say the least; they're all licking their wounds in the Dragonblight. He's on his own and yes, he needs friends, but he doesn't know his own strength or what he could do. If he hurt you, even by accident..."
The great bull's voice broke as he thought of losing yet another loved one. Anduin took his arm and tugged at him, coaxing him up onto the cot. It creaked under the big man's weight, but held. The young prince snuggled under his powerful arms, and they quickly found themselves curled around each other, despite the heat and the Tauren's fur.
"It'll be all right, Carne. I'll be careful. We won't hurry. You're too special to me; I won't hurt you by risking myself."
Carne sighed, breathing in the scent of sun and bitter healing herbs in Anduin's hair. "All right, then. So, tell me about this dragon-boy."
They talked softly of the Black Prince, and the Sha, and their hopes for peace, until they fell asleep.
