I’ve got a theory that the best thing to do to combat al Quaeda is discredit them, and here’s how I think we could do it:

Pull most of our troops from the middle east. Leave enough to keep an eye on the Peace Corps workers that we send in instead, to build and teach and help. The best way to beat al Quaeda is to replace them. That’s WHY they have been supported for so long. Not becasue the Middle East hates America, but because they need schools and hospitals, and al Quaeda has been building them.

This “war” can’t be won with missiles; we need hammers instead.

Edit: I have tried to find credible journalism to back up my assertion that al Quaeda built anything, and I can't find it. So at this time, I have to take that back. But if anyone finds anything, please feel free to share.

Edit: This article, found by [livejournal.com profile] in_this_guise, doesn't come right out and say specifically that al Qaeda is doing humanitarian work in Kosovo, but it DOES say that: 1) al Qaeda has spent a lot of money in the region discussed. 2) al Qaeda recruits in mosques and religious schools where poverty is a huge factor. 3) Humanitarian aid to Muslims from (unnamed) Arab countries only comes to communities who agree to build new mosques.

The article is a worthwhile read with a good map. I consider it to be solid support for the idea that terrorists take advantage of poverty-stricken people by not only frightening them (poor people have no recourse, so it is easy to compel obedience) but also by giving them humanitarian aid. This is manufactured Stockholm syndrome on a huge scale. We could replace them, at least in Kosovo, and if we did, we might see a big change.
