Was it hubris that led him to not read Mendel's paper? Did he think that if he didn't figure it out, no one else could, either?

Monks are perfectly capable of good, reasoned science. There are places where religion and science can't intersect, but a friar can absolutely be a reliable botanist. Both sides of the divide would be well served if they remembered that they can work together on many things.
