You should take a look around my workplace - male scientists are the minority here.

Women do tend to dominate biology, especially biology education. Even in biochem women are a large population, but as soon as you step outside those fields, the estrogen dwindles fast.

Maybe particle accelerators aren't cuddly enough? I don't know.
