So let's talk about Michael Vick for a minute, shall we?

First, an explanation of what a pit bull is. Common parlance has turned "pit bull" into a breed. The fact is, it is not. "Pit Bull" is a profession. Any dog that fights any other animal in a ring or pit is a pit bull, whether it's a rottweiler, a german shepherd, or a standard poodle. This is why you will never see a dog shown at Westminster, the AKC, or Eukaneuba trials as a pit bull. However, you will see the Staffordshire Terrier, and the American Staffordshire Terrier (or AmStaff) shown, both of which are commonly referred to by pet stores and other misinformed sources as the pit bull breed.

There is no magic breed of dog that is madly vicious in a fighting ring. These dogs are not more naturally ferocious than any other terrier. It is the original function of a terrier, any terrier, to "go to ground." This means that these dogs were orignially bred for their fearlessness. They would be sent into vermin dens to fight and kill pests ranging from mice to badgers to foxes, depending on the size of the terrier. Your cute little Maltese is a stone-cold mouser in the kitchen. The Airedale, preferred dog of the British police, will take on a Welsh fox without hesitation. And the Staffordshire? Protected grain silos from brewery rats.

There is no dog that is better as a weapon then a companion.

Vicious dogs are not born vicious. They are made vicious by people.

And Michael Vick sponsored dog fighting. He hosted fights on his property. He paid to breed the best fighting dogs. He trained them. And when they survived losing, he participated in the killing of six dogs.

If they were six abused German shepherds, he couldn't get away with calling his actions "immature" and saying he's found Jesus now.

I hope he dies horribly in prison.
