Living soldier under consideration for Medal of Honor following heriosm in Afghanistan

Whether you receive the award or not, I salute you, and I am grateful to you and your brothers and sisters in arms. Whether or not you are defending me in this conflict is a matter open to debate. But you volunteered to put your life on the line for me and all our fellow countrymen when you signed up, and I respect that. Thank you.

“There is concern, officials say that early disclosure could place political pressure on President Barack Obama to approve the medal or could cause embarrassment for the soldier if it's not approved.”

I've become so used to governments and other large organizations using secrecy to hide wrongdoing that I was both surprised and pleased to see official silence used for a sensible and helpful purpose.
