Well, I was going to model for a sketch artist...but he's, um, sketchy. I have no proof of his credentials (although I have seen him work and he's quite good), he wasn't comfortable having Craig around, he wanted me to do nude work (which I don't want to do), and I have no evidence that he was actually going to pay me. So no dice. Sucks, would have been $40 an hour for 3 weeks.
But, I got my income tax refund, which is over $1300.
And now I'm out the door to get fingerprinted for my state sub certificate.
I'm typing this up at my mom's house because Craig's mom's computer wasn't responding to her mouse.

I can somewhat understand not having credentials.
Not every artist of middling talent can afford to go to a visual arts school.

I can understand not wanting to have someone else around but your subject while you're trying to concentrate on art.
Some individuals lose focus very easily.

I can understand wanting a nude model.
Such is quite standard practice for life drawing.

...but not paying someone in advance for services rendered or guaranteeing pay--
that's just wrong.

Ah, but this guy claimed to go to an art school. And quite frankly, if you can't focus on your model while his/her escort is there, you shouldn't claim to be a professional artist. It's professionally questionable not to have one. Yeah, nudes are normal. But they weren't part of the original deal.

Here's the kicker: I gave my mom the guy's name--Douglass DeStefano--along with certain other particulars. She works closely with Allstate's insurance fraud division, which means she has several corporate private investigators who owe her favors. And these people couldn't prove, with some major background info, that this guy existed. The apartment I was in (briefly) didn't belong to him or anyone with a relative by that name. When a corporate P.I. can't prove your existance, there's no way I'm going to trust you.

It's a shame, the dude was talented.

With that in mind, how can you be sure that it's even his artwork?

You're definitely right there. If I hadn't actually watched him draw me, I'd never believe he even had that much going.
